Having spent time in the former Soviet Union countries, I can attest that a socialist-communist society indeed breaks the human spirit and does nothing to encourage new ventures and risk-taking. There is very little reward to be gained and so not many people take the risk. Therefore, nobody reaps the benefits of more tools and everybody suffers. It is overwhelming to see the effects and residual of communism when visiting the Eastern European countries. Reading this reminded me of the old saying: "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for the rest of his life." I would agree, then, that saving and investing in tools enables others to work and become self-sufficient and that is more "charitable" than plunking a few quarters into a tin cup.
